I took Ada’s watercolor class. She broke down composition well, and I enjoyed mixing my own colors. She even played music! It was such a relaxing experience. I retired recently and was searching for my creative self, and this was absolutely it!

The watercolor class opened my head and heart. I loved how Ada taught me to look beyond the obvious and how to notice things that I couldn’t see at first. It was very liberating and fun too!

At 71, I had to learn something new. This is the first time I’ve actually learned a new disciplines in 30-40 years. It’s very invigorating. I chose this studio because the NYBG was too disciplined, and Art Students League was too loosely structured. I liked the warm approach to work independently on my art with the guidance of a professional artist.

I liked the easy-going atmosphere and the personal attention I received from my instructor. Taking oil painting was a form of stress relief for me and it was really engaging.

My class made me feel happy and relaxed, and it was a therapeutic experience for me. My instructor Ada was very warm and the place itself is inviting. Classes are two hours long for adult classes, and i wish it was longer! I really appreciate the one-on-one constructive conversations with Ada. This was the best decision I could have made.

I wish I could give more than 5 stars!!!!! I loved having Ada as my oil instructor. I felt she inspired me to try new things, and it was an exciting time for me. I look forward to Wednesday evenings all the time!

I was interested in taking more oil classes, and I took Ada’s Oil class. I learned lots of new techniques like dry brushing, blending, and even “erasing” small mistakes with a Q-tip. I felt the class was very supportive, and gave me a creative outlet I looked forward to every Monday. Thanks Ada!

My Dare to Oil class with Ada is the highlight of my week! I had fun painting, and learned a valuable lesson in that every accident I made could be painted over. Ada is an amazing teacher and is my top reason for returning to the studio!!!

The Beginner’s Drawing Class at the Met is a great way to learn to draw and see the Met in a new way. Our instructor, Isaac Ruff was fantastic. He started with a demonstration of drawing basics, then built on that foundation after giving us time to practice each technique. He also went around to every student and provided positive feedback and excellent tips for improvement. I highly recommend this class and Isaac as an instructor!

Five stars is not enough! The Art Studio NY is very welcoming, and the environment the teachers create is so comfortable. I was able to focus and let go of my own troubles weekly, and had time to develop my interest in drawing. My teacher was very informative and honestly just wonderful!

Sophia creates a warm atmosphere for drawing. I took the class to improve upon my own skills and experiment with new media like charcoal, pastels and pencils. I also took Jake’s figure drawing class with a live model-loved it!

I took the oil class and found it to be both fun and serious. I got to explore painting trees on a dark canvas at my teacher’s suggestion, and it turend out really good. I’m happy that this studio is so close to home, I love making art but have no place to do it at my house. Fantastic experience. Very meditative and relaxing.

I recently retired and I wanted to start a new hobby. I found the Art Studio NY and took Jake’s Painting 101 class. He inspired me and helped me build confidence to create art.

Jake is the epitome of the word “teacher”. He works very hard to get each student to ‘see, to ‘do’-he is gifted. I feel we are fortunate to have him here. He is just so encouraging and dedicated to his students.

My favorite thing about taking a class was the different people and the talent they all brought to the table. I took the class to develop my own talent and grow to become a better artist. I loved my experience and I feel like a better artist in the 8 weeks my class ran for. My experience offered growth, development, inspiration, and i loved that my teacher was patient and understanding.

I took the Intro to Oil class and was worried I would be overwhelmed, Instead, I felt welcomed and made to feel confident. The teacher really eased me into the process and it was fun and inspiring being around all the artwork and artists. My teacher Ada was amazing! She was friendly, knowledgeable, and very supportive. She made me feel safe to paint anything while providing constant encouragement.

I took a class to learn some new skills and I had a great time! My instructor taught me how to mix colors, and even offered information about arts history and culture. It was a nice way of getting stress-relief, and it helped greatly that the Art Srudui NY has access to lots of convenient transportation. The 1, 2, and 3 trains are a block away, and the B train is another block away. It’s very easy to get there!

I took Intro to Oil painting. It was a rewarding and challeneing experience! I liked trying something new and fun and my teacher encouraged me to try painting with a palette knife which was really different! And I got to be creative for once-my career leaves little room for creativity.

so the last time i’d tried to draw anything i was about 10! was looking for a creative outlet and found Fear Free Drawing at The Art Studio NY. It has changed my life. i went from a true beginner producing basic work to a more experienced beginner 🙂 producing work i’m really proud of. classes are small and the staff at the studio is so encouraging, supportive and instructive without being destructive. Rebecca, the owner, actively follows students on social media and shares her praise as well. art has now turned into a form of meditation and a safe place where i don’t judge myself as I do normally! well worth your time! and be sure to sign up for class with Michelle. she has a certain way of gathering people to her that don’t want to leave!

Trieu G. commented on 19-Jul-2017 08:41 PM
I am so happy I found this place! I have not ever drawn anything my whole life (stick figures for UML don’t count). I wanted something for a beginner to start me off, not a full-blown art education. I Yelped, of course, and after looking at a dozen studios, I chose this one because they had a “Fear Free” drawing class. How appropriate.
Well, the business shares its space with an apartment complex; it sits in the basement. For a claustrophobic person, I was a bit nervous at first as I walked in and saw the office right behind the door. The 2 art rooms are a bit cramped and not at all fancy as I imagined them to be after seeing them in movies, but guess what? This place really grows on you! The owner and instructors are so welcoming, especially to newbies like me who don’t even know how to hold a pencil. They not only encourage you, but provide you with instructions catered to your own skill level and comfort zone. So after I stopped breathing for a minute, I raised my hands and asked for help.
There are numerous different classes for every level. You can purchase all your supplies there. What’s great for folks that don’t know what’s needed, they actually bundle all you need and list them on the course site. I basically knew what to expect the first day I was there. Make sure to read the instructions that is emailed to you after you sign up.
When you get to the studio, ring the door bell once. Someone will let you in. Just sit and wait. The elevator person will flag you momentarily when the elevator is headed down to the studio. That’s it. Enjoy!

This is a great class for people who just want to explore their own strengths and weaknesses, experiment with various techniques and media, and have as much or as little guidance as needed to work through your individual projects. Jake is great at giving each person the attention they need and the class is a great mix of people. I love it and hope to do it again.

The Art Studio NY is such a great time – and I’ve really never considered myself an artistic person. First of all, the vibes are friendly and the free wine sets the tone beautifully. Second, it is totally laid back with instructors who really customize their approach for each client. They keep the classes intimate so they are able to cater to each person’s needs and help them reach their own creative style. It is not a lecture or seminar by any means, but rather VERY hands on and positive.
Hands down, The Art Studio NY is by far the number 1 place to take art classes in NYC!!
