Oil Painting Style – Techniques and Tips

Oil paints can seem intimidating, but with a little bit of guidance from our experienced art instructors, you’ll learn everything you need to know about oil painting. Our art teachers encourage you to explore a wide variety of painting tips and tools.

For example, you will learn: color mixing (getting that perfect tint), oil glazing (for extra sparkle), personal subject matter (how to bring your own experiences and observations to make art), composition (putting all the painting subjects together in a pleasing and interesting way), building texture through paint (it’s almost like sculpting), palette knife painting (you thought it was all brushes), details with paintbrushes (learn from the masters), and more! You will no longer be a neophyte.

These are oil painting supplies that every beginner oil painting artist needs. When you sign up for an oil painting class you’ll be able to purchase all of these together in our simple oil paint supplies kit

Disposable palette paper
Palette knife with triangle shaped tip
Turpenoid (Natural)
Linseed oil (the most common, but other types of oil are sometimes used in oil painting: poppy seed, walnut, safflower)
4 paint brushes: mix of flats and rounds, mix sizes (very skinny to 1” wide)
One small tube of each of the following colors: Titanium White, Cadmium Red Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, Sap Green or Viridian Green

Loved Beginner’s Oil Painting – the class is very positive and allows you to learn your own style. My instructor was encouraging and supportive but didn’t take away from my self-expression. I learned techniques on how to start an oil painting, like layering and adding values, etc.

Relaxing, informative, challenging and satisfying. My favorite experience in class was surprising myself by drawing things I thought would be too hard.
