Drawing Classes at The Met — The Metropolitan Museum of Art
These art classes take place at The Met (The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC).
Drawing inside a museum changes how you look at it. Instead of walking past a sculpture in eight seconds, you sit with it for an hour — and by the end you have seen more of it than most visitors ever will. Our beginners drawing classes at The Met use the collection itself as the subject: Greek and Roman sculpture, Egyptian objects, arms and armour, paintings from across the museum.
No experience is needed, and no experience is assumed. Your instructor teaches the fundamentals as you go — how to measure proportion by eye, how to see light and shadow, how to start a drawing that will not fall apart halfway through — working with you individually while you draw. Class sizes stay small so that is actually possible.
Sessions run as multi-week series, meeting once a week in a different part of the museum. Bring a sketchbook and a pencil; we will tell you exactly what to bring before your first class. Museum admission is not included in the class fee. If you would rather begin in a studio, our beginner drawing classes cover the same fundamentals indoors.
Sessions run back to back, so you can start with any of them. If one has already begun, you can still join and pay only for the classes left.Upcoming sessions
