Francesca Lo Russo

Art Teacher

Francesca Lo Russo is a Brooklyn-based artist working primarily with oil paint and mixed media. Francesca finds great joy in sharing her love of art with students of all ages and encourages uninhibited creativity and freedom of expression in her classes. She truly believes in the generative and therapeutic potential for art making, and seeks to create a lively and peaceful classroom experience for all levels. Francesca approaches her New York City drawing and painting classes as a wonderful way of being mindful; in observing the world around us we can be truly present.

Francesca has spent the past several years working with non-profits and art education advocacy groups in New Orleans, and also teaches at after-school programs in Harlem. She has a warm and open spirit, and believes that everyone can learn to draw and paint.

In her own artwork, Francesca enjoys painting from observation, as well as culling imagery from personal narrative, pop culture, and sensorial memory. Her work is often figurative and combines elements of psychological interiority, with an acute awareness of the poetics of time and space. Francesca is an art history enthusiast and loves to engage her classes in the world of contemporary art and what is going on at our amazing museums, in New York City.

Francesca received her BA in Plan II from The University of Texas, and she earned her Masters of Fine Arts in Painting from Yale. She was a resident at the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, a recipient of the Ely Harwood Schless Memorial Prize for Excellency in Painting, and she received the Schoelkopf Travel Grant. She is currently a graduate student of counseling and psychoanalysis.
