Kids/Teen and Adult Online Art Teacher
Allison Shyer is an art educator, multimedia artist and screenwriter born and raised in New York. Allison provides a nurturing, compassionate and welcoming space for students of all ages to be creative and joyful in the artmaking process. Through an intermodal approach to teaching based in Expressive Art, Allison guides students through multiple ways of expressing themselves creatively while encouraging play and experimentation over a “perfect” finished product.
Allison believes that creating a space of safety and support is primary to the role of an art teacher, and this is the foundation students use in their art classes as a springboard to try new things and grow in their confidence and proficiency. Allison feels that art can be a helpful tool during stressful times that allows people of all ages to relax and get in touch with themselves.
Allison is trained in Expressive Art Therapy, an approach that emphasizes the experience of creating art over the finished product.
Through their love of art and design, Allison brings warmth, encouragement and acceptance into the art studio through online art lessons in drawing and painting, mixed media art, assemblage, digital art, sculpture, digital photography, animation and motion graphics.
Allison’s passion for teaching was sparked when they were trained in Intermodal Art Therapy while earning an undergraduate degree at Bard College. Since then, Allison has taught art across disciplines and ages in many prestigious institutions including The 92 Street Y, Wingspan Arts and ReelWorks. Allison is currently enrolled in Hunter College’s MFA Program.
