Clar Angkasa
Independent Teaching Artist

Clar Angkasa is New York City Brooklyn-based author, illustrator, comic artist and animator from Jakarta, Indonesia. She believes art making is an essential part of life and should be accessible to all. Driven by a passion for storytelling, she views art as a chance to give everyone a voice, a platform through which artists can share their story and learn something new about themselves. As someone who grew up in a very supportive creative environment, Clar is very eager to provide a similar space for students where they can explore and nurture their skills in a fun and enjoyable way. Clar loves sharing her enthusiasm for art with others and hopes her students will find as much excitement in art making as she does and will maintain this excitement even beyond the classroom.
Clar studied at Rhode Island School of Design where she earned her BFA in Illustration. She often works digitally and usually brings her iPad wherever she goes because she loves being able to work on her art projects anywhere and anytime. She also likes having her sketchbook handy so she can sketch out ideas the moment it occurs to her. Clar’s favorite traditional medium is ink and watercolor but she always welcomes the chance to branch out with other media such as acrylic, gouache, graphite and various printmaking techniques.
From elementary school to college, Clar has taught a large range of students of all ages and artistic backgrounds. Her main expertise lies in illustration, comics and animation, and she is always happy to help others with any art-related topics. Outside of teaching, Clar has been focusing on sharing her Indonesian culture through her art. Her debut graphic novel, Stories of the Islands, is a collection of reimagined folktales from Indonesia and she has also collaborated with the Indonesian community in NYC to exhibit artworks inspired by Indonesian culture and stories.

When not teaching or making art, she could be found obsessing over her 20+ houseplants, daydreaming about food, or catching up on her never-ending list of things to read/watch/listen to.
